So I think we should get back int doing proper AARs. I want to encourage everyone who participated to give their input into how the day went, their experiences, etc. This will help improve the quality of games as well as help people learn.
Anyway, I will be using the standard AAR format:
The Plan
The Performance
The Issues
The Fix
Scenario 1The Plan:Tan team was to set up and execute an ambush and rolling defense against Green team somewhere along a predetermined route.
The PerformanceAs Tan Team Leader, I split us into three fire teams of three each. I had Alpha which consisted of Knight and DeWayne. Arkus lead Bravo with Kill Happy and Boomer. Wildman (after much whining on his part lol) lead Charlie with Rookie and Chopper.
I set up our team in the H9.1 and G9.2 area of the forest. I placed the teams in a slight "V" formation, pointing North, along the main path. Alpha team took position in a ravine on the Eastern side of the main path. Bravo set up on the opposite side, slightly offset to avoid fratricide. Charlie was at the Northern most point of the V, for overwatch and support. Alpha and Bravo were hoping to catch Green in a choke point. I instructed my troops to keep in radio communication, especially when contact is made (reminder: contact means enemy is detected, not engaged).
Contact was first made when a team of Green came up behind Bravo, who alerted me to their location and was soon engaged. After taking 50% casualties, I ordered Bravo to withdraw behind Charlie. Shortly thereafter, Alpha was engaged. I decided that Alpha's position was not defendable compared to Green's position and started a withdraw as well. I was hit shorty thereafter.
After being pushed from our original position, I spread our teams out in the "Ft. Highlander" region, in a wide area defense. We were probed here and there for a while, but pretty much held. Then the game was called.
The Issues- Tan Team radio comms procedures. There was a lot of unneccessary traffic. Also some people did not respond to being hailed (not necessarily their fault).
- Initial contact was not along the 'main' path, as expected.
- Fire teams becoming separated
- Troops from both teams entering 'off limits' areas
The Fix- Everyone should invest in a
good radio. Not a cheap-o that barely works. Something that doesn't have all the beep and buzzes (or at least turn them off and lock it). Also study up on radio comm procedures. Most importantly, only leaders should be the ones doing most of the transmitting. Troops should transmit only vital information or if in need of help. Suggestion to that would be multiple channels for each team, but that may be stepping ahead of ourselves for now. But, there is a good read on tactical comms that can be found
HERE.
- This was mostly my fault as a leader. I should've anticipated vanguard teams probing for our position. I tried to keep as good 360 degree security as possible while still bring enough firepower to bear to destroy our intended target. Next time I think I'll try to keep the teams closer together for better support and communication.
- As people respawned, withdrew, or engaged, they became separated from their fire teams. I wanted fire teams to stick together for many reasons. One of which ties into the radio issue. They should've been close enough to communicate via whisper or hand signal. If you lose your team, then radio for position guidance. Team leaders, try to keep track of your troops and their disposition.
- If specific areas are going to be off limits, they need to be made clear to
everyone. This will be a small issue to keep in mind in the next few games with hunting season upon us.
This is all I have typed up tonight, I may work on the rest later. Please feel free to chim in, praise, critique, whine, bitch, or whatever.
